How to Make Extra Money From Home: A Comprehensive Guide

Are you looking for a way to make extra money from home?

Who isn’t, right?

Now is the ideal time to sit at home and come up with side hustle ideas, money-making blogging niches, and more ways to generate extra money from the comfort of your own home.

You could be thinking that something that appears to be so simple must be an enormous task, but I'm here to tell you it isn't necessary.

Yes, making money from home does require some work and time, but it is not as difficult as many people believe.

You can establish a goal and focus in order to begin earning money online, as long as you have a purpose and direction.

It all starts with your interest and skill. All you have to do now is build an audience and start selling your items once you've established an online presence!

There is a demand for everything, whether it's digital services or handmade items.

And the equation for success will work for both!

So, if you're ready to get started making extra money online, here is everything you'll need:

5 Steps to Making Extra Money From Home

I'll go over my five-step approach to earning additional money from home. You may start small and operate as a side business, or you can go all out!

Just keep in mind that this isn't a success you'll see overnight! Creating a web presence may take months to years, but the path that takes you there might result in extra money in a very short time.

1 Figuring Out Your Niche

When it comes to making money on the internet, you might believe that the more services you provide and the more subjects you cover, the better. Sorry, but this isn't accurate at all.

The most successful businesses, big or small, all have one thing in common: they focus on a particular niche.

And that's exactly what you need to do if you want to make money from home.

You could be interested in dozens of things, but in order for your business to be successful, you'll need to choose just one.

Once you've built yourself up as the preferred expert in your sector, you may begin earning money online through affiliate marketing (your readers will trust your recommendations on goods) or even providing online courses (your followers will want to learn from you).

Overall, having a specialty makes people — and potential buyers – feel more secure buying what you have to offer.

So How Do You Find Your Niche?

The good news is that finding your niche is not as difficult as you might think. In fact, it's probably something you're already quite passionate about.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

- What topics do I enjoy discussing?

- What hobbies or activities do I make time for outside of work/school?

- Are there any areas in which I have more knowledge than the average person?

- What online communities do I already participate in?

Chances are, you'll know your niche when you see it. And once you've found it, stick to it!

Finally, you need to consider if you can monetize your niche if you want to make money online.

This all boils down to how successful your niche is and how helpful you are. To see how profitable your competitors' blogs are, look at their track records.

Overall, keep in mind that money won't come overnight. You must have the desire and commitment to attempt, fail, and try again when it comes to generating money online.

2 Starting a Blog

Now that you know what your niche is, it's time to start a blog! This will be the foundation for everything else you do in terms of making money from home.

Blogging is one of the most popular (and profitable) ways to make money online.

Not only does it give you a platform to share your interests and knowledge with the world, but if done correctly, it can also be a great source of income.

The first step is to choose a blogging platform. WordPress, Medium, and Tumblr are all popular choices.

Then, you need to come up with a domain name (this will be your website's address) and web hosting (this is where your website's files will be stored).

You can get both of these through companies like GoDaddy or Bluehost.

Once you have your domain name and web hosting, it's time to install WordPress (or whichever platform you've chosen) and start creating content!

If you need help getting started, there are plenty of resources out there, including our very own Ultimate Guide to Starting a Blog.

And if you're not sure about blogging, don't worry – there are other ways to make money from home that might be a better fit for you.

I'll go over some of those alternatives later on in this post.

3 Using SEO to Gain Traffic

It's all about SEO, or "Search Engine Optimization." It's an essential element in having your blog rank on Google.

When someone searches for anything, you want to make sure that your material appears in the first three results or at least on the first page.

Keywords and Phrases

The first step is to make sure you're using the right keywords and phrases in your blog posts.

Do some research on Google AdWords or any other keyword research tool to find popular – but not too popular – terms that relate to your niche.

For example, if you're a dog trainer, you might use keywords like "dog obedience," "puppy training," or "dog tricks."

Once you've found a few good keywords, make sure to sprinkle them throughout your blog post, including in the title, headings, and body text.

But beware – too many keywords will make your content sound spammy, so use them sparingly!

Focus on Writing Content

.....that is Helpful and Engaging

In addition to using the right keywords, it's also important to make sure your content is actually helpful and engaging.

No one wants to read a boring blog post, so make sure yours are interesting and informative.

One way to do this is by including personal stories, case studies, or even jokes (if they're relevant to your niche).

And of course, always proofread your work before hitting "publish"! No one likes typos.

By following these simple tips, you'll be well on your way to getting more traffic – and making more money – from your blog.

But remember, SEO takes time and there is no guarantee that you'll rank # first overnight.

4 Building an Audience

The goal of increasing the number of people who visit your site is to build an audience.

The more people you have reading your blog, the more potential there is for making money.

There are a number of ways to build an audience, but one of the most popular – and effective – is through email marketing.

Email marketing involves collecting email addresses from your website visitors and then sending them periodic updates about your blog (or any other news/updates you think they might be interested in).

To do this, you need to sign up for an email marketing service like MailChimp.

Once you have an account, you can create a sign-up form to add to your website.

Visitors can then enter their email address into the form to subscribe to your list.

Just make sure the content you post solves a problem for your audience. When your blog becomes their go-to place to seek answers, they will trust you, identify with you and want to share your content with others.

5 How to Make Extra Money From Home

Now that you know the foundation of creating your blog and its content as well as attracting visitors and building an audience, it's time to figure out how you're going to make money online from home.

Here are some suggestions for both internet services and actual physical items that you can sell on the internet to earn additional money!

1 Freelance Writing

One way to make money from home is by offering your freelance writing services to businesses and bloggers.

If you have a knack for writing and know a bit about SEO, this can be a great way to make some extra cash.

There are a number of websites that act as middlemen between writers and clients, such as Upwork, Fiverr, and Contently.

Or, you can directly contact businesses and bloggers that you think might need your services.

Just make sure you have a portfolio of previous work to show them!

Of course, you can also start your own blog and write articles for it (like I'm doing right now).

That way, you get to keep 100% of the profits!

2 Website Design and Development

Another way to make money from home is by offering your web design and development services.

If you're familiar with HTML, CSS, and other web development technologies, this can be a great option for you.

Again, there are a number of websites that act as middlemen between designers and clients, such as 99designs and Toptal.

Or, you can directly contact businesses and entrepreneurs that you think might need your services.

Many small businesses need help creating or updating their websites, so this can be a great way to earn some extra cash.

And just like with freelance writing, you can also start your own blog about web design and development – and make money through advertising or affiliate marketing.

3 Coaching

If you're an expert in a particular field, you can make money by offering your coaching and consulting services.

Whether it's business advice, relationship advice, or anything else, people are always willing to pay for guidance from someone who knows what they're doing.

You can offer your services through a number of different platforms, such as Skype, Google Hangouts, or even in-person meetings.

Or, you can start your own blog or podcast and offer your advice for free!

People will appreciate the valuable information you provide – and may be more likely to hire you as a coach or consultant in the future.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to making extra money from home as a coach. As long as you can lay out a method so that others can achieve what you have achieved, you can be any kind of coach!

4 Photography

If you're a talented photographer, you can make money by selling your photos online.

There are a number of websites that allow you to sell your photos, such as ShutterStock, iStockPhoto, and Fotolia.

Or, you can start your own photography website and sell your photos directly to businesses and individuals.

This can be a great way to make money from home, especially if you already have a large portfolio of high-quality photos.

5 Blog/Social Media Management

If you're good at managing blogs and social media accounts, you can make money by offering your services to businesses and bloggers.

There are a number of platforms that allow you to find clients, such as Hootsuite, UpWork, and Fiverr.

Or, you can directly contact businesses and entrepreneurs that you think might need your help.

Many small businesses need help managing their online presence, so this can be a great way to make some extra cash.

And just like with freelance writing and web design/development, you can also start your own blog about blog or social media management – and make money through advertising or affiliate marketing.

6 Editing or Proofreading

If you're good at editing or proofreading, you can make money by offering your services to businesses and individuals.

There are a number of platforms that allow you to find clients, such as UpWork, Fiverr, and Proofed.

Or, you can directly contact businesses and entrepreneurs that you think might need your help.

Many people need help editing or proofreading their documents, so this can be a great way to make some extra cash.

And just like with freelance writing and web design/development, you can also start your own blog about editing or proofreading – and make money through advertising or affiliate marketing.

7 Graphic Designer

If you're a talented graphic designer, you can make money by selling your designs online.

There are a number of websites that allow you to sell your designs, such as 99designs and DesignCrowd.

Or, you can start your own graphic design website and sell your designs directly to businesses and individuals.

You know those gorgeous pins that you see all over Pinterest? They most likely came from a designer who was compensated for the designs!

Graphic design isn't simply limited to Pinterest; if you like creating visuals, you may get paid online by selling social media banners and even infographics!

8 Virtual Assistant

If you're good at administrative tasks and enjoy helping others, you can make money by becoming a virtual assistant.

There are a number of platforms that allow you to find clients, such as UpWork, Zirtual, and VirtualAssistants.

Or, you can directly contact businesses and entrepreneurs that you think might need your help.

If you decide to work as a virtual assistant, you don't want to spread yourself too thin.

Instead, focus on some core VA tasks that are in high demand such as email, blog and social media management.

9 Sell Mason Jar Crafts

It's not only about selling digital services to make money online. You may get extra money from home by offering crafts and tangible items!

There are many things you can make out of mason jars from candles to gifts to using them to sell homemade beauty products.

10 Knitted or Crocheted Items

Do you know how to use a hook or a pair of knitting needles? You could be making money by selling crocheted or knitted goods!

Hats and scarves aren't the only things you can create with this craft; you may also make plushies, handbags, dishcloths, and a variety of other items.

11 Upcycled Items

It doesn't have to be costly to produce things for money at home. Recycling and upcycling used and outdated objects enables you to create a wide range of goods, many of which may be sold.

Think teacup and saucer bird feeders, chalkboard picture frames, wine bottle glasses and refinished furniture.

12 Gifts and Décor

Handmade items are always in demand, especially as gifts or for decorating one's home. There is something authentic and lovely about a product created by someone else.

Basket gift-giving is on the rise, especially for people who are unsure what to give their friends, family, and loved ones.

You may also give it a go with decorated mugs, string art, and other unusual goods like wind chimes.

13 Beauty Products

If you make your own soaps, body scrubs, or other beauty products, you can sell them online or at local craft fairs.

Not only is it rewarding to make your own products, but you also get to control the quality of the ingredients.

You'll have to be wary because naturally produced items have a limited shelf life, and there may be restrictions in your region about selling beauty goods.

14 Food Products

Similar precautions apply for selling food products, but don’t let that stop you from selling them. People are willing to pay for home cooked goods and meals.

From baked items to freezer meals, there’s no end to what you can sell from your kitchen.

There are an infinite number of possibilities for additional money from home!

That’s right! There’s no end to how you can make extra money from home!
